How to measure your height

Height is the input for BMI and many ratios, so a small error changes the result. Use a stadiometer when possible; at home, a flat wall and a hard-backed book work.

Steps

  1. Remove shoes and bulky clothing; stand with heels, buttocks, shoulders, and the back of your head against a flat wall.
  2. Keep your head level (the lower eye socket and ear opening horizontal) and look straight ahead.
  3. Breathe in normally and stand as tall as you can; mark the wall at the top of your head.
  4. Measure from the floor to the mark with a metal tape, to the nearest 0.1 cm (or 1/4 inch).

Common errors to avoid

  • Measuring in the evening — the spine compresses about 1–2 cm by the end of the day.
  • Slouching, keeping shoes on, or flattening the hair when marking.
