How to measure your waist
Waist circumference captures abdominal fat that BMI misses. The WHO / NIH method places the tape at the midpoint between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone, at the end of a normal exhale.
Steps
- Stand upright, relax your abdomen, and do not suck in.
- Find the midpoint between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone (iliac crest) — roughly just above the hip bones at the side.
- Wrap a flexible tape snugly (without compressing the skin) parallel to the floor, and read it at the end of a normal breath out.
- Record to the nearest 0.1 cm / 1/4 inch. The NIH flags higher risk above 40 in (102 cm) for men and 35 in (88 cm) for women.
Common errors to avoid
- Measuring over clothing, or at the wrong level (too high at the ribs or too low at the hips).
- Pulling the tape tight, leaning, or sucking in your stomach.
